A coupler conversion starts with the mounting already on your model. Some installations are a straightforward swap; others need a different pocket, a modified shank or changes to the mounting height.

The guides below show specific conversions step by step. They are arranged from simpler work to more involved fitting, and later examples build on techniques introduced earlier.

Before making changes, identify the model and its mounting arrangement, read the complete guide, and compare it with the current coupler listing. Manufacturer revisions can change the fit even when the model name stays the same.

Older Sergent Engineering examples are retained for their useful techniques and photographs. Product finishes, packaging and availability may have changed. Contact us if you are unsure which current part corresponds to an older example.

After installation, check coupler height, free sideways movement and clearance through curves and grade changes. Complete the break-in procedure before putting the model into regular service.
