Will these mate with conventional HO knuckle couplers?
No. Our coupler heads follow the proportions of the prototype. Conventional HO knuckle couplers have a different profile and will not couple with them.
For a gradual conversion, a transition car with one of each coupler type can connect the two parts of your fleet. Our EC87DC dummy coupler also mates with our working couplers, but a pair of dummy couplers cannot open to couple or uncouple.
Will they work on 18-inch curves?
Curve clearance depends on the model, its coupler mounting and the sideways movement available inside the draft gear box. An EC87 compatible shank uses an existing pocket, but that alone does not guarantee clearance on every model or curve.
Check that the shank swings freely, then test the model through your tightest curves, turnouts and changes in grade. Longer equipment and closely coupled models need particular attention.
Do I need to align the couplers by hand?
Yes. Most installations do not use a centering spring, so you position the couplers before bringing the cars together. The wire on the uncoupling wand helps with this. Their smaller gathering range rewards a little practice, especially when coupling on curves.

How important is coupler height?
Correct height and smooth transitions in your trackwork help every installation operate reliably. Type E couplers allow some vertical movement; interlocking Type F and H heads need closer attention to height and alignment.
Use the HG87 height gauge to check HO installations, and test coupled cars over your layout’s grade transitions before converting the rest of your fleet.
Which draft gear box should I use?
Compatible-shank couplers are intended for conventional HO draft gear boxes. Narrow-shank couplers suit a slimmer installation, including the Accurail Proto:HO box. Narrow-shank kits do not include draft gear boxes; obtain them separately.
Fit varies by model and box. Follow the listing for your particular coupler and consult the installation guides before filing a shank or changing a mounting hole.
What about other manufacturers’ dummy couplers?
Some can be adapted, but their profiles vary and compatibility is not guaranteed. The EC87DC is designed to mate with our operational couplers without modifying its knuckle profile. At least one coupler in the pair must have a working knuckle.
